How to Be the Next Big Beauty Blogger

July 31, 2014 By dave

So you want to be a beauty blogger. You’ve chosen one of the most competitive blogging fields to get into, with scores of others competing for the top place. Just like any other type of blogger, you need to find your voice, the best ways to present your unique personality, and some type of niche that will help you stand out. First determine which arena is best for you: Writing, vlogging (video blogging) or a little of both. Chances are you already know which medium best suits you, and where you’re comfortable can help direct your next move.

There are many types of beauty bloggers, such as the all natural types who tout argan oil as the ultimate beauty product or are very anti-chemicals in makeup. Then there are those like Michelle Phan who make millions on endorsements due to her insane creativity with makeup applications. “Beauty” is a very broad category and it’s nearly impossible to cover everything well. Find your niche and stick to it.

Be your own guinea pig

People follow blogs because they feel a connection with the blogger, and as a self-proclaimed beauty junkie or expert, you can’t be afraid to experiment. To be an expert, you have to have personal experience with a product or technique, which means you’re going to have to volunteer as test subject. Be flawless, be goofy, be fierce or sassy; whatever your natural personality is that your closest friends get to see, that’s going to be the blogger that people fall in love with.

Many successful beauty bloggers give tutorials and how-to’s, and that’s going to be an easy way to get followers. Do you have a technique or skills that you’ve never seen mastered by anyone else? Giving up those secrets whether in front of the camera or with photos is your key to success. An easy way to build trust and drum up interest is with shock value, and that can include the end result of your incredible talents.

Find your voice

For the most part, the most successful bloggers aren’t afraid to be themselves, they have an engaging personality and they’re someone everyone wants to be friends with. There are the occasional snarky and successful bloggers, but remember there’s a fine line between snark and just being mean. Don’t force sarcasm if that’s not your natural personality, and remain true to your beauty guru inside to get your best footing. Plus, don’t overlook the benefits of learning from your competition.

Following other beauty bloggers provides inspiration (not copycatting) and keeps you in the loop. Once you start to build your own following, they might respond in kind by following you. We’re all in this together, one beauty win at a time.
